Types of Golf Wedges
You love the game of golf. You get out to the course every chance you get, and you are comfortable with your game, but you want to improve. The next step, for the evolving beginner, is to purchase a set of golf wedges. There are three main types of wedges: golf sand wedges, golf lob wedges, and golf gap wedges. Any of these wedges can be used for chipping around the green, but each wedge has its unique function.
The first type to add in your golf wedge set is the sand wedge. As the name suggests, the sand wedge is used to make shots out of a sand bunker. Out of all the wedges, the golf sand wedge has the widest sole. This allows the club to get underneath the ball without digging into the sand.
The second wedge, the lob wedge, is most often used to make a high arc shot over obstacles, such as trees or water. The golf lob wedge has a short shaft, and it comes in a loft range of 56 degrees to 64 degrees; lob wedges most commonly have a 60 degree loft range. The lob wedge also makes a short roll that is great for hitting a lob shot to the putting green.
Last in the golf wedge set: the gap wedge. Essentially, it closes the trajectory gap between a 9 iron and a sand wedge. Without question, the golf gap wedge is the most versatile club in a golfer's bag. The golf gap wedge can be used for longer shots with little roll upon landing, shorter lob shots, or to set up for the next shot. Golf gap wedges come in a loft range of 46 to 54 degrees. These wedges either come in a low loft range of 46 to 49 degrees, or a higher range of 50 to 54 degrees.
Since almost three-quarters of a person's golf game is hit 125 yards from the green, a golfer's short game is crucial to his overall score. The way to really shine on your short game is with the right set of golf club wedges.
